Way to petabyte non-volatile memory heaven

What was the change in our life, when the first storage device with a 1 GB capacity was made. Or what was the effect of flash drives on our life? First, they simply reduced the size of our devices such as video cameras. Former VHS[2] cassettes were only capable to store a single movie. But the newest flash drives have enough storage capacity to store many DVD quality movies inside. The size and weight differences between these 2 technologies are obvious. Shortly, we had more storage capacity in a minimalized box.

Because we have enough storage capacity, recently, we were watching the movies in DVD quality rather than former VHS one. Nowadays, each 25 /50 GB Blu-ray[3] discs are on the market and with that quality, you have a chance to count the number of sands in a beach movie. More storage capacity brought us more quality in the every area of multimedia.

Today, there are many comprehensive storage solutions on the market. Former mechanical HDDs to newest SSDs (Solid storage devices), there is a lot of development in storage technology. Moreover, Toshiba announced the world's first 512GB SSD laptop [4].

So, what would happen if we reach 1 petabyte SSD level in technology?

· Smaller devices / computers

· Less energy consumption

· Chance to produce a better quality multimedia

· Faster data processing in comparison with former HDD technology

It’s not just about the solid-state technology. Our demand for bigger storage capacity is increasing very fast. “According to new research from International Data Corporation (IDC), HDD shipments for enterprise applications will increase from 40.5 million units in 2009 to 52.6 million units in 2014” [5]

Latest improvements on the browser and broadband connection sides, forced some companies to turn their existing desktop based solutions into browser side and made some companies thinking about the web based competing products. For example, we started to use web based spreadsheet editors like Spreadsheet Live[6] rather than the desktop based Excel. Thus, on the provider side, need for the amount of storage is increased extremely.

Finally, the more storage capacity will continue to chance the habits on both products and users sides. And obviously, it will increase the quality of services we will have.
